Photobook Publishing with Éanna de Fréine

This seminar is aimed at photographers who see the book as the final form of their projects, but want to retain more economic and creative control over the publishing process. Photographers interested in this seminar should also be interested in how to make professional books using the best materials and practices. The seminar is not intended for photographers looking to make one-off photobooks with services such as Blurb, or handmade books. It is ideal for photographers who want to create photobooks of their own work, while retaining full control over the process.

The purpose of this seminar is to inform and advise photographers on the best practices for self-publishing photobooks. The seminar is aimed at photographers who wish to have more economic and creative control over their publishing, and are looking for guidance on where to begin.

Looking at the various aspects involved with photobook publishing, with a view to helping photographers establish a sustainable practice beyond a single publication, this seminar will guide you through the key phases of indie publishing, such as:

  • Why you should consider Indie publishing for your photobook
  • Important questions you should answer before proceeding
  • The biggest mistakes I’ve seen other self-publishers and publishers make
  • Ideas on how to fund and validate your photobook before you commit to printing
  • How to prepare and print your photobook in the most economical way
  • How to sell and distribute your photobook online and to bookshops
  • Creative ways to grow your fanbase and build an audience who will eagerly await your next book

Theoretical elements in this sessions will include examples and case studies on editing, funding, printing and selling. Practical elements will look at issues such as creating a funding and promotional campaign for your book.

Éanna de Fréine

The seminar will be presented by Éanna de Fréine. Éanna is the founder of The Velvet Cell, an independent photobook publisher with a focus on urban photography, and IndiePhotobooks, an educational site dedicated to sharing knowhow, ideas and strategies about photobook publishing.

Since 2014, he has sold over 5,000 books to buyers and bookshops all over the world and published books by both up-and-coming photographers, such as Jordi Huisman, Sander Meisner and Sam Laughlin, and world-renowned photographers such as Peter Bialobrzeski, Alexander Gronsky, Greg Girard, Toshio Shibata and Alejandro Cartagena.

Éanna believes that photobooks are the best way to establish yourself as a photographer. Photobooks are not just a great way of getting your work out there into the world, it is also a form of expression unto itself that he believes is truest to the medium.

Éanna graduated in 2012 from the Photography and Urban Cultures MA at Goldsmiths College, London, before relocating to Taiwan and Japan for over four years to photograph and document urban Asia.
